Family Violence

Family Violence

Family violence afflicts many Australian families, and can be a risk factor for new migrants who struggle to find housing, employment and social stability in a dramatically different culture.

While there is a growing government focus on family violence and more services operating in this sector, these services sometimes lack the cultural competency or sensitivity to tackle the specific relationship and parenting issues that affect many African-Australian families.

Afro Helpline has the capability to apply traditional African counselling techniques and protocols through elders, faith leaders and other community leaders, to support families who are suffering from domestic violence or relationship breakdowns.

If you would like to support our work in this area, or have had an experience that may be useful to others, please write to us at confidential@afrohotline.org.au.
